Philo Somalia

About the journal

A place to think about Somalia in public.

Philo Somalia is an independent journal of political analysis on Somalia and the Horn. Arguments go on the record here — dated, signed, and slow enough to be read twice. It is not a communiqué, a campaign, or a ministry organ.

The Somali coastline at golden hour.

The editor

Abdirahman Samawade

Abdrhmn Sāmāwādē

Abdirahman Samawade is a political analyst and constitutionalist writing from Seattle, Washington. The beat is the gap between the Somali state as it is briefed and the Somali state as it is lived: an unfinished federal bargain, a diplomatic language of territorial integrity that is expensive to spend, and a security architecture that trains an army and a patronage network at the same time.

On X he is @PhiloSomalia — long Spaces, the RealTalk series, the same arguments at conversational speed. This site is the written form. English is the default; Af-Soomaali when the argument belongs there. The seal is his: a thinker, an open book, and the geography of Somalia in one mark.

What you will find here

Essays

Long pieces on politics, the constitution, diplomacy, history, society, and the blue economy. Not news. The work is to put a problem on the page before anyone budgets a solution for it.

Research

Working papers, briefings, and concept notes. Longer than an essay, filed on their own shelf.

Guests

Outside notes when they sharpen the record. Abdirizak A. Hassan’s concept on the social contract is one. Signed, dated, unhurried.

Independence

No donor template, no party line, no Villa Somalia masthead. Briefings are available. A press line is not.

Consulting

Private briefings on Somali politics, constitutional process, and Horn geopolitics — for readers who need a conversation that is not a talking point. Write here, then follow up on X.

The dispatch

New essays, sent when they are ready. No filler.
